There’s something magical about autumn. The crisp air, the golden light, and of course—the leaves transforming into fiery shades of red, orange, and yellow. If you’ve ever wanted to chase the world’s most stunning fall colours, here are five breathtaking places to see autumn foliage around the globe. I used to love Summer but now my favourite season is definitely Autumn (Fall). Not just for the foliage but the warm temperatures of September, coziness of October and pre-holiday cheer of November. Here are my picks where to enjoy the beauty of nature’s art:
🍂 1. Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto in autumn is one of Japan’s most breathtaking experiences. From mid-November to early December, the city’s temples, gardens, and riversides burst into fiery shades of red, orange, and gold. Popular spots like Tōfuku-ji, with its sweeping views of maple-filled valleys, and Kiyomizu-dera, perched above the city with dramatic seasonal scenery, are must-visits.

For a quieter experience, stroll along the Philosopher’s Path or explore Arashiyama, where autumn colours reflect beautifully in the river. Whether you’re visiting historic shrines or enjoying tea in a garden pavilion, Kyoto’s fall foliage offers a perfect blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.
🍁 While admiring Kyoto’s autumn leaves, don’t miss the chance to actually taste them! Momiji tempura—maple leaves preserved in sweet batter and deep-fried—is a unique seasonal treat you’ll find at local markets and temple fairs. Light, crispy, and subtly sweet, these golden snacks capture the essence of autumn in every bite, making them a perfect companion to your fall strolls through the city.

🍂 2. Vermont, USA
Vermont is one of the most iconic destinations in the world for fall foliage. From late September through mid-October, its rolling hills and quaint villages are blanketed in brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Scenic drives along Route 100 or through the Green Mountains reveal postcard-perfect landscapes. Small towns like Stowe, Woodstock, and Manchester charm visitors with historic inns, covered bridges, and harvest festivals.
Outdoor lovers can hike trails in Smugglers’ Notch or paddle across Lake Willoughby for panoramic leaf views. Whether you’re exploring maple sugar farms or simply soaking in the colours from a quiet country road, Vermont in autumn captures the very essence of New England’s beauty.
🍎 Autumn in Vermont isn’t complete without a stop at a local orchard for fresh apple cider and warm cider donuts, the state’s most beloved fall treat. Pair it with a drizzle of golden Vermont maple syrup or a slice of pumpkin pie from a roadside farm stand, and you’ll taste the essence of a New England autumn.
🍂 3. Bavaria, Germany
Autumn in Bavaria offers a fairytale mix of golden forests, mountain backdrops, and historic villages. From late September to October, the Bavarian Alps and rolling countryside transform into a tapestry of warm colors. Scenic drives along the Romantic Road lead through medieval towns like Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl, framed by glowing autumn leaves.

In the south, hiking around Neuschwanstein Castle or Lake Eibsee provides unforgettable views of fiery forests against snow-dusted peaks. For a more relaxed pace, explore Munich’s English Garden or sample seasonal treats at local harvest festivals. Bavaria in fall is the perfect blend of nature, culture, and cozy Alpine charm.
🍄 Autumn in Bavaria is as much a feast for the palate as it is for the eyes. After a day of exploring golden forests and fairytale castles, settle into a cozy tavern for seasonal specialties like venison with red cabbage and dumplings, or a creamy chanterelle (Pfifferlinge) dish.
🍂 4. Seoul, South Korea
Autumn in Seoul is one of the most beautiful times to explore South Korea’s capital. From late October to early November, the city’s parks, palaces, and mountains glow with brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Stroll through Gyeongbokgung Palace to see fiery maple trees framed by traditional hanok architecture, or hike up Bukhansan National Park for sweeping views of the city surrounded by colourful peaks.
The tree-lined paths of Namsan Park and the scenic walk along the Cheonggyecheon Stream also become magical during this season. Paired with crisp weather and seasonal street food, Seoul in autumn offers a vibrant mix of culture and natural beauty.
🍲 Autumn in Seoul brings not only colorful foliage but also comforting seasonal flavors. As the weather cools, locals enjoy hearty dishes like kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and hotteok, sweet pancakes filled with cinnamon and nuts, sold at street stalls.
🍂 5. The Lake District, England
The Lake District in autumn is a paradise of rich colors, mirror-like lakes, and cozy village charm. From late September through November, the woodlands and fells shift into warm tones of gold, russet, and amber. The colours are perfectly reflected in waters like Derwentwater and Windermere. Hike classic trails up Catbells or Helvellyn for sweeping views of valleys carpeted in autumn hues, or take a leisurely boat ride instead.
Villages such as Grasmere and Ambleside offer the perfect base for enjoying crisp walks followed by fireside pubs and local treats. The Lake District in fall is the perfect mix of tranquility, dramatic landscapes, and English countryside charm.
🥧 Autumn in England’s Lake District is the perfect season to savour hearty, comforting foods. First take a crisp walk along mirror-like lakes, then warm up with a traditional Cumberland sausage and finally finish with a slice of rich sticky toffee pudding (which was created in the region). Having a freshly baked meat in a local village pub pie is also a great option.
✨ Final Thoughts

From the fiery temples of Kyoto to the rolling hills of Vermont, the fairy-tale castles of Bavaria, the vibrant cityscapes of Seoul, and the tranquil lakes of England’s Lake District, each destination offers its own unique way to celebrate the season. Whether you’re chasing golden leaves, cultural traditions, or cozy countryside charm, fall is the perfect time to slow down, wander, and let nature’s most colorful show inspire you. Wherever you go, autumn reminds us to pause and savor beauty before winter’s quiet sets in.
